Stewart Omondi may be only 17 years but the lad proved immense for Vihiga United on Sunday in their struggle to get out of the relegation zone, scoring an early goal against Western Stima in a a 2-0 win. Omondi, driving home the lead on just two minutes, stunned the Stima side who also lie precariously in the drop zone.
Having been signed from the third tier during the midseason, the lad took to the BetKing Premier League like fish to water, earning his first start of the season against Tusker FC. He has since asserted himself at the Mike Mururi’s side.
”The team isn’t in a nice position and everyone wants to help so that we survive. This means the competition for a starting place in the team is very high. I give my best in training and whenever called upon to start,” says the youngster.
United came up against a Western Stima side that was four point ahead of them on the log and knew only a win would ensure they stand a chance of stay up clean without having to necessarily play in the play-offs. Omondi says that’s why they went hard.
”Starting strongly was important because the matches tend to get harder by the minute. I’d say the early goal inspired us more and that’s why we added a second,” he adds.
United currently lie just one point behind Stima, and five ahead of Mathare United who occupy the second from bottom position.
They have a home tie next and its the soldiers Ulinzi Stars- 1-0 winners over defending champions Gor Mahia- who stand in United’s way this Saturday.
