Newly promoted Vihiga United lie bottom of the 18-team BetKing Premier League (BKPL) table standings with only one goal scored from their opening two matches, points however, remain elusive.
Coach Sammy Okoth however, believes if his charges can improve on their discipline, then they can get something out of their round three clash against regional rivals Nzoia Sugar FC, a contest slated for Sunday 13th at the Mumias Sports Complex.
”Having made no major inclusions from our squad that played in the second tier last season, I think the boys are trying their best to cope with the top level. Our opener against Homeboyz was good, save for the one goal they scored,” says Okoth.
United started the season at home, losing 1-0 to last season’s 1st runners up in the league. they, however, suffered a suspension from he clash as Henry Juma earned a second yellow card just as they were trying to press for an equalizer.
In week two, Sammy Sindani would see red at the break when he confronted the match officials at half time. United were trailing 2-0, and would lose the match 3-1, a spirited short handed second half that saw Norman Werunga fired their first goal of the season.
Even as they welcome Juma back for round three, Coach Okoth needs more.
”The red cards undid our plans. It’s tough playing in the top level and it’s tougher when you go a man down. I’ve talked to the boys and we will see an improvement of that in round three,” he adds.
United host a Nzoia side that picked its first point of the season when they hosted Kariobangi Sharks in round two of the BKPL. A hard fought 0-0 draw against Kariobangi Sharks is what the sugar millers come with to Mumias. United on the other hand, see a chance to claim first season points.
