Vihiga United FC on Saturday 20th held BetKing Premier League title contenders to a barren draw at home in a BKPL match staged at the Mumias Sports Complex from 3 pm.
Both teams went into the fixture with tactical adjustments to their starting teams. While the visitors had Isaac Kipyegon playing in central defence alongside Clyde Senaji, Coach Sammy Okoth started new signing Prince Busaka in his own defence line. Norman Werunga finally rested.
Leopards started strongly, earning a free-kick at the edge of the box after Elvis Rupia was brought down but standing behind it himself, the Harambee Stars forward could not drive Ingwe into the lead.
Cagey play followed, with the hosts keen on disrupting play as much as they could and this troubled the Leopard’s rhythm. Having mastered calmness in goal for United, Mustapha Oduor would be called upon in the 29th minute to deal with an Isaac Kipyegon free-kick.
There was nothing separating the two sides at half time.
Former Leopards youngster Lawrence Luvanda replaced Nigerian Import Junior Adeyefa upon resumption. By the hour mark, though no goal had been scored save for Marvin Nabwire and Patrick Okello each splitting match cautions.
Coach Patrick Aussems needed fresh legs, and duly summoned Harrison Mwenda and Peter Thiong’o on 60 minutes, withdrawing Jaffar Owiti and Caleb Olilo. It was Rupia, however, with a chance for the lead but the forward- probably fooled by Oduor’s lanky frame in goal, blasted wide.
United had seemingly mastered he ways of the Leopard and thwarted all attacks wit ease, occasionally pouring forward themselves and in once such situation, Kevin Omondi would fire over the bar with only Benjamin ocean to beat.
Both teams had to settle for a point apiece as the rains poured towards the closing stages of the game.
The result leaves leopards third on the log while United stay third from bottom.
