Vihiga United head to Bukhungu for Decisive ‘Western Derby’

Vihiga United go into match day 31 of the FKF Premier League with their hopes of staying up lying in the hands of their Wednesday opponents- Kakamega Homeboyz, the very side that dispatched them 1-0 on match day 1 at the Mumias Sports Complex.

Nothing short of a win guarantees hope for United as they will have exhausted all their fixtures whereas their relegation Zonoe foes Mathare United and Western Stima, will still have one match to go. United have to win.

Homeboyz go into the match on the back of three successive defeats- the first against Gor Mahia then a home fall to Bandari before title-chasing Tusker did shut-out victory over Muyoti’s men over the weekend. Homeboyz themselves, need today’s pints- for prestige at least.

Youngster Stewart Omondi is last week’s Premier League player of the week and will heavily influence today’s Bukhungu contest. Roped in at the mid-season for United, the kid has grown in confidence and been a thorn in the flesh of many a full-backs. He is sure to start.

Coach Mike Mururi managed Homeboyz in the past and comes back with a struggling team at Bukhungu. A highly defensive coach, it will be interesting to see who starts in defense for him, especially with all of his centre-backs, Martin Werunga, Abisa Onyango, Prince Busaka and Simbiri Sindani all fit. Today, however, they’ll need goals upfront.

Homeboyz on the other hand have welcomed back the national U23 team duo David Odhiambo and Sylvester Owino both of whom have already tasted a few minutes since coming back from Ethiopia. Fringe players upfront, however, have in recent times been given playing time by Coach Nicholas Muyoti. Forwards Derrick Onyango and Kingsley Fasanmi both had huge minutes against Tusker and in the absence of Allan Wanga, will definitely play a role today.

Kakamega Homeboyz play for pride today, but United play for survival. Who wins, we can all but wait for the 3 pm kick-off tie.
