Ulinzi Stars trounces Homeboyz for first win

Ulinzi Stars closed the calendar year 2020 on a high, with a 2-0 win over Kakamega Homeboyz in the two sides Match Day 5 clash at Afraha Stadium ion Wednesday 23 December.

First half goals from Masita Masuta Bitolwa and Enosh Abonga Ochieng did the job for the Soldiers, who had gone winless in their opening two matches, having joined action a tad late.

With an unnamed squad from their 0-0 draw with Wazito FC, Ulinzi Stars head coach Benjamin Nyangweso sent a clear message that he wanted the misses in the last game turned to hits. His charges heeded the call and did the business quite early.

Masuta opener

Masita Masuta rose high above a static Homeboyz defence to head powerfully past David Juma in just the 11th minute for the opening goal. Elvis Nandwa, who didn’t have a very good outing against Wazito, made amends this time, with a well taken cross that picked out Masuta from a crowded box. By the time the visitors defenders came alive, Masuta was wheeling away in celebration.

Nine minutes after Masuta’s goal, Atse Bonaventure came close to leveling the clash. A moment of indecision and poor communication in the Ulinzi backline gifted the midfielder easy possession in the box and he went for a clever chip past the exposed James Saruni.

By then the Ulinzi skipper had read his intent and started backtracking before producing a fine leap to impressively tip the ball over for a corner.

Enosh goal

Taking the cue, Ulinzi powered forward in another surge from the flanks and Brian Birgen floated in another fine cross. The man, Masuta was again up the highest and powerfully headed goalward. David Juma in the Homeboyz goal punched the ball and it met a waiting Enosh Ochieng who with the easiest of tap ins opened his goal account in the 30th minute.

Ulinzi Stars should have finished the first half with a third goal but he drew a good save from Juma after getting to the end of a sliced clearance by the Homeboyz defence.

Juma save

Enosh was at it again right at the start of the second half but Juma was equal to the task, yet again.

Homeboyz introduced Stephen Etyang and Christopher Masinza later on and while they had good pressure on the Ulinzi goal, the soldiers were astute in their defending and easily dealt with all thrown at them.
