An impressive Ulinzi Stars maintained their unbeaten start to the 2021/2022 Football Kenya Federation Premier League as they piled even more misery to a limping AFC Leopards after condemning them to a 2-0 defeat in a Friday league match played at Thika Stadium.
Goals from Brian Birgen and Hillary Simiyu in either halves ensured the Soldiers ascended to the top of the table, albeit temporarily, after collecting a first win over Ingwe since February 2019.
Coming into the match, Leopards were hoping to end their two match losing streak and three game winless run that had them collect only one point from the last available nine points.
After holding the Soldiers for a majority of the first half, those intentions of ending their losing streak were scuttled following a costly blunder by young goalkeeper Maxwel Mulili who gifted the opponents an easy goal just two minutes to the half way break.
Birgen had the ball just outside of the Ingwe box when he unleashed what looked like a shot that Mulili could deal with.
However the inexperience of the goalkeeper came to the fore after the goalkeeper shockingly decided not to touch the ball after a wrong assumption that the ball was off target. To his dismay, the ball crept into the bottom corner as Birgen wheeled off in celebration with the goalkeeper left distraught.
In the second half, Simiyu, who was making his first start at the club since joining before commencement of the current campaign, capped off his debut with his first goal at the club in the 57th minute.
Thise two goals proved to be enough as Ingwe lost for a third straight game as Ulinzi went top of the log on 10 points.
Ingwe stayed in 12th place on four points
