For the ninth game out of 11 in the BetKing Premier League (BKPL), Ulinzi Stars failed to collect the maximum points, drawing 2-2 with Western Stima in their Match Day 11 clash at Kericho Green Stadium.
Oscar Wamalwa scored early for Ulinzi Stars and when they just seemed to be cruising, were shocked early in the second half by their former player Baron Jobita. The Soldiers did retake the lead later through Elvis Nandwa but that too was shortlived as Laban Otieno leveled again for the stubborn visitors.
Ulinzi Stars were dominant from the onset and forced errors from the visitors, with Ibrahim Ochieng going into the referee’s book very early as he ineligibly stopped Bernard Ongoma’s run.
In the 14th minute, Wamalwa got his second goal of the season after calmly converting a pass from Elvis Nandwa from inside the box.
With Ibrahim Ochieng living dangerously, Stima coach Abdalla Juma withdrew him, with Laban Otieno taking his place in the 33rd minute.
Ulinzi Stars should have doubled their lead after Wamalwa controlled a cross from the left that had beaten the entire defence. However, the forward inexplicably went for a loop over the exposed keeper and hit the ball off target.
That would be the final meaningful action of the first half and Ulinzi were made to pay for the miss right at the start of the second half. Bonaventure Muchika was adjudged to have fouled Michael Karanok in the box and a penalty was awarded, with Oketch stepping up to score with it.
Omar Boraafya, who had been introduced at the start of the second half in place of Michael Otieno just hours after completing his registration for the team would turn provider in the 75th minute. After fine work in midfield, he picked out Nandwa who switched well to beat Kennedy Omondi for Ulinzi’s second goal.
The lead did last for just seven minutes though. A Western Stima corner was not well defended by Ulinzi Stars and found Otieno waiting all alone with the goal gaping and all he needed was to rise and head home. He did, restoring parity for the second time.
