Ulimwengu late strike puts Sofapaka to the sword

Gor Mahia edged out Sofapaka 1-0 at the Thika Stadium in the two teams’ BetKing Premier League (BPL) round 21 tie played on Sunday.

Jules Ulimwengu grabbed the game’s only goal in the 74th minute to secure the vital three points as well as maintain Gor’s winning streak in the league that now extends to seven games.

Manuel Vaz Pinto’s men now move up one place to 3rd on the BPL log with 37 points, five adrift of top spot and with the benefit of having played a game less than the sides above them.

Early pressure

Coming into the match, Gor Mahia were the more motivated side and looked the better team. Their relentless pressure resulted in an early chance from a setpiece taken by Cliff Miheso after Captain Kenneth Muguna had been brought down near the danger area by Sammy Imbuye.

The winger would fail to get his effort on target and so did both sets of players with the chances that befell them until 16 minutes from time when Ugandan forward Ulimwengu saved his side’s blushes with a neat finish after getting on the end of a Muguna pass.

Apart from the impact on the standings, the win also saw Gor secure the season’s spoils over Batoto Ba Mungu, having also won the first-leg tie 2-1 away in Wundanyi.

Gor are scheduled to play their game in hand this week against Bandari where a win will take them up to within two points of top spot. Sofa on their end are set to host Ulinzi Stars on Friday.
