Posta Rangers upset Tusker 1-0 in this Betking Premier League (BPL) match at Ruaraka grounds on Tuesday.
Tusker came into the match knowing a win would help their title chances but failed to make their dominance count.
They are yet to win at their Ruaraka home ground, with this result their first loss at home and will now hope their rivals drop points in their games on Wednesday.
They were on the front foot from the start of the match and could have gone ahead early on. A pass from Henry Meja presented Boniface Muchiri with a glorious chance but Posta keeper Kelvin Opiyo was alert to keep him out. They continuedto dominate proceedings and Meja had a chance to give his side the lead but his effort was saved.
A few minutes later, Rodgers Aloro nearly scored his second of the campaign but his effort hit the woodwork from a freekick. At the end of the first half, Posta Rangers nearly scored after a mishap by Tusker keeper Michael Wanjala but Georson Likonoh could not react quickly and the ball was cleared to ensure the teams went level at the break.
Tusker continued with where they had left off in the first half and had another clear cut to get the lead but Brian Marita skied his effort over the bar.
Humphrey Mieno then had a chance to score but could not direct his effort goalward from a low cross by Meja. Mieno would then force Opiyo into a good save minutes later with the league leaders now searching for a goal desperately.
Posta Rangers who by then were defending astutely and countering with every chance they got finally got the lead. A slip at the halfway line presented substitute Josephat Lopaga with a run at goal and he struck the ball at the far post to give his side the lead. Meja then had a chance to level scores but his powerful header was too central to trouble Kelvin Opiyo.
Tusker in their bid to look for an equalizer were short at the back with most of their men forward and Posta Rangers would have scored more with Francis Nambute and Joshua Nyatini guilty of missing their chances.
They were lucky the misses did not cost them the lead and they ran out as winners to end Tuskers five game unbeaten run.
Posta Rangers face Bidco United in their next fixture while Tusker will now shift their attention to their three next matches ahead of the June 30th starting with the game against fellow title challengers Kariobangi Sharks.
