Tusker on the brink of League Title

Tusker FC left Sudi Stadium with just a point, an entertaining 0-0 draw against Nzoia Sugar, but enough to keep their heads high when they go into the final match day as elsewhere, their title rivals Kenya Commercial Bank had also been held by AFC Leopards.

Nzoia Sugar were already safe from relegation, but a home game at the Sudi has never been easy for any visitor and Tusker, though needing just a win to be officially declared champions, knew this.

And it was the hosts Nzoia with more intent in the opening ten minutes. On-form Hillary Simiyu darted inside the box on four minutes with his final shot being taken out for a corner kick. Felicien Okanda would earn Nzoia’s second corner kick in the 8th minute.

On the other end of the field, former Nzoia man Luke Namanda delivered Tusker’s first real chance of the game but this was deflected off of Ronack Elvis. Madoya Michael came close in the 19th minute but his attempted lob at Benson Mangala went just over the crossbar.

By the half hour mark, both teams had grabbed a yellow card apiece with Henry Mejja for Tusker and Ian Karani heading into the break with first half warnings.

The opening few minutes of the second half was all Hillary Simiyu who burst into life, tasking Tusker full-back Jimmy Mbugua with some overwork. Coach Ibrahim Shikanda would make the first alteration to the playing units with the introduction of Daniel Musamali for Leonard Kasembeli in the 65th minute.

For the final fifteen minutes, coach Robert Matano would bank on the fresh legs of Apollo Otieno and Chris Ochieng who had come on for Ngesa Vincent and Luke Namanda.

Nothing would be forth-coming for the brewers as Nzoia held on resolutely to deny them the full share of the spoils.

Tusker still stay top of the FKF Premier League table standings on 62 pints, three ahead of the bankers who need a huge win on the final day (and a loss elsewhere for Tusker) for them to bag the title. Tusker have a 7-goal superior goal difference to KCB. It will take a tremendous miracle for KCB to be crowned champions. They play Nairobi City Stars in their final match while Tusker play Bidco United.
