Tusker finally got the better of AFC Leopards in their third attempt at Thika Stadium after they beat them 2-0 in Friday’s Betking Premier League (BPL) match.
The win also helped Tusker increase their lead at the top of the log and have an 11 point lead over AFC Leopards.
The league leaders were missing the services of six players including their top scorer and captain but they welcomed back goalkeeper Emery Mvuyekure back from injury.
Despite that, they started brightly against Leopards with Ogutu floating the ball to Chrispinus Onyango but his effort towards goal missed the target by inches.
Tusker continued ramping up the pressure, and a good delivery from Humphrey Mieno’s freekick evaded Leopard’s defenders and found Christopher Ochieng who did well to control the ball and smash it into the net to give his side the lead.
Elvis Rupia who was drifting into the right channel made a good delivery to find Bienvenue Shaka but he fumbled with the ball and wasted a glorious chance of restoring parity.
With the game now settled and both not threatening each other’s keepers, Tusker almost added another when substitute John Macharia, in for injured George Ogutu set up Brian Marita but his effort hit the woodwork.
Tusker started the second half as they did the first and added another seven minutes later after a Macharia shot was saved by Ezekiel Owade but Chrispinus Onyango was at the right place at the right time to score his sides second and give his side some breathing room.
AFC Leopards then had a chance to half the deficit after Brian Wanyama’s deft through ball put Peter Thiongo one on one with the goalkeeper but he failed to beat him.
AFC Leopards continued knocking on Tusker’s door and were almost rewarded with a goal but Emery tipped over Thiongo’s curling free kick for a corner. Despite their best efforts,
Tusker remained resolute at the back and saw out the game for their sixteenth win of the season.
