Nzoia Sugar FC recorded their first win of the season in week 8 of the BetKing Premier League- and one coming from a convincing disposal of premiership heavyweights Sofapaka FC on Saturday.
Goals from Leonard Kasembeli and Eric Otieno gifted new coach Ibrahim Shikanda with the win, one that puts them tails up as they head to play Wazito in round 9.
It is a huge motivator, Shikanda says, and if the boys can replicate that performance, perhaps Wazito too can take the fall.
”I think we had a good game and the boys stuck to the plan. Sofapaka is a very good side and we had to be careful in order not to be stunned at home. The home factor is also a factor in the clash even though fans haven’t been allowed yet- but the idea of playing at home gives you some pride and you don’t want to lose,” he says.
The victory took Nzoia to 11th position on the 18-team BKPL table standings and coming from four successive draws, this is where the season changes for the sugar millers.
”With enough belief in ourselves I believe we can build on that win over Sofa. We have very young boys in the team and they have shown they have what it takes to match up the big boys,” continues Shikanda.
Eric Otieno, scoring the second goal of the game- and his second of the season, is among the youngsters who have impressed him so far alongside loanee Daniel Musamali who has featured in every game since the season started.
Nzoia travel to Nairobi for their Friday 22nd fixture against 4th place Wazito FC.
