After watching his side succumb to yet another defeat in the league earlier this week, Mathare United head coach Frank Ouna believes that confidence to score goals is now the only thing remaining for his charges to be able to claw their way out of the relegation zone.
On Wednesday, Mathare put up a brave fight against a rejuvenated Gor Mahia and only lost by one goal – an own-goal to be exact – and for large spells in the game, had the defending champions on the ropes.
It is this performance, as well as the one against AFC Leopards in their last game (also lost 1-0), that has given Ouna belief that once his players get confident in front of goal then they will be able to win matches.
He said, “The most important thing is for the players to get confident when they are presented with a chance to score. Scoring goals is the only thing I believe that is remaining in our game because everything else we are doing right.
“We are defending well as a team and made it hard for Gor who are the defending champions. We also did it well against Leopards and if we can maintain with that and score at least one goal then we will be in with a chance at winning,” he said.
Mathare sit bottom of the BetKing Premier League (BPL) log with eight points and seven adrift of safety. They however have a game in hand on the teams above them and will next face another stern test, this time against league leaders KCB FC on Saturday.
