Posta Rangers beat Vihiga United 2-1 at the Thika Municipal Stadium to ensure they are mathematically safe from relegation and will feature in next season’s Betking Premier League.
Despite their best efforts, Vihiga United were unable to beat their opponents and their fate of playing in the league next season lies in danger.
They will now hope bottom placed Mathare United drop points as they are only two points above them although they have played two more games.
The match started slowly with neither keeper being tested in the early stages. The home side slowly started growing into the game and just before the hour mark, winger Eliud Lokuwam was fouled in the area and the referee had no choice but to point for the penalty.
Michael Apudo stepped up and despite the keeper guessing correctly, his effort had the required power and he dispatched his spot kick confidently to give his side the lead.
The goal seemed to awaken Vihiga as they now started playing with some conviction.
Minutes before the halftime mark, their efforts finally bore fruit after some lazy defending and Lawrence Luvanda tapped in from close range to ensure both sides went to the halftime break on level terms.
Vihiga started the second half as they had ended the first and almost scored two minutes into the half.
Mark Okola dribbled past Faina Jacob and teed up Luvanda who unleashed a fierce shot but keeper Kelvin Opiyo was alert to the effort and he parried it away for a corner.
Posta Rangers responded with a dangerous counter attack of their own, with Apudo releasing Jackson Dwang who shrugged off an opponent and then lobbed Vihiga keeper Morgan Ambuka but his effort went narrowly wide.
Vihiga United continued probing Rangers’ defense but failed to create any clear-cut chances. As the game edged closer to its conclusion, Rangers started being more adventurous in attack and they finally got their second with a minute of regular
