A high intensity opening half from Posta Rangers on Saturday against Mathare United ensured the Mailmen walked away with all three points thanks to a 2-1 win in the two teams’ BetKing Premier League (BPL) round 22 tie staged at the Ruaraka grounds.
In a game of two halves, it is Posta who took the onus, scoring twice in the first half through Jackson Dwang (9th) and Dennis Oalo (38th). Youngster Norman Ogolla would net almost immediately after the restart to halve the deficit and set up a tense second stanza but the damage had already been done before the breather.
Looking to build on the win over AFC Leopards three days ago, Mathare were slow off the blocks at Ruaraka and could have been down 3-0 at the half if Dwang had converted a penalty just 15 minutes into the tie.
Frank Ouna’s men would regroup at halftime and bossed the second half with Ogolla curving a sumptuous freekick past Kevin Opiyo to open his account for the Slumboys.
They would continue to seek for the equalizer but it wouldn’t fall for them with Posta resolute at the back.
The win marked the first time since 2010 that Posta have claimed the league double over Mathare, having won the first-leg matchup 2-0. They now move up the standings and into 12th place with 25 points.
Mathare on their part remain locked in the relegation zone and with Western Stima winning against Gor Mahia also on Saturday, now find themselves six points adrift of safety.
