Posta Rangers duo of coach Stanley Okumbi and goalkeeper Kevin Opiyo have on Tuesday been named the BetKing Premier League’s (BPL) best for the month of March.
The two were feted at Football Kenya Federation’s (FKF) Kandanda House with several other members of the club also present. Aside from the silverware, the two also walk away each with a KES 50,000 cash prize for their efforts.
In the last active footballing month before the current suspension on sporting activities in the country was imposed, The Mailmen proved to be the top performers, picking up seven of a possible nine points from three matches played with Opiyo the standout player.
Opiyo finished top ahead of Zoo FC’s Alex Onchwari and Gor Mahia’s Wilson Silva Fonseca while Okumbi beat Nicholas Muyoti of Kakamega Homeboyz and Gor’s Vaz Pinto.
Opiyo kept cleansheets in all three games played in the month with the standout display coming in the 1-0 win over defending league champs Gor Mahia and the season’s 4th most potent side, who until that fixture at the Kasarani Stadium Annex, had only failed to score on three previous occasions.
Perhaps the most impressive take of all is that the former APs Bomet player is currently in his debut season with Rangers and began the campaign as the team’s third choice custodian behind Jairus Adira and Bryne Omondi.
Zoo FC defender Onchwari came in second after also having himself a stellar month as the Kericho based side improved their chances of getting out of the relegation zone.
He scored the only goal of the game as Herman Iswekha’s men grabbed their first win of the campaign with a 1-0 win over Vihiga United. He was also instrumental on the defensive end for his team as they kept two cleansheets. He also picked up a Man of the Match nod for his performance in the 1-1 draw with KCB in Nairobi.
Wilson Fonseca, Gor’s Brazilian import, came in third after finishing the month with two goals from four matches with his goals helping Gor towards their two wins in the month.
The burly striker signed in the mid-season transfer window, scored a stoppage time winner away to Kakamega Homeboyz as Gor won 2-1 to begin the month on a high. He stuttered in the next two games but was again among the goals as Vaz Pinto’s men finished off the month with a 3-1 win over Bidco United.
The March awards signify the second time this season that a Coach and Player of the same team have been feted in the same month. Bandari FC duo of coach Andre Mbungo and striker William Wadri won in February.
