Vihiga United head coach Sammy Okoth feels that his side were in with a chance to claim victory in their first-leg FKFPL Playoff against Kisumu All Stars had it not been for an early penalty conceded that undid their game plan.
Vihiga lost 2-1 to All Stars at the Mumias Sports Complex on Saturday 31 October and now need to win by two clear goals in the return leg fixture to be played in Kisumu on Wednesday if they are to seal promotion to the top tier.
The NSL side were unable to take advantage of playing at home and came undone as early as the 4th minute when All Stars earned a penalty that Willis Otenda dully converted.
Even though they managed to pull level as the game wore on in the second-half courtesy of a Dennis Wafula header, Vihiga were again caught at the back with substitute Shadrack Otieno sealing the win with a fierce drive 10 minutes from time.
In his assessments after the game, Okoth who led Vihiga to a 3rd place finish in the NSL last season, acknowledged that his team played right into their opponent’s hands after the early goal.
He said, “The early penalty undid our game plan completely. We rushed into every decision we made after that and it played hugely to the benefit of our opponents, whose game plan also seemed like it was geared around creating stoppages as there were too many of them and the game never really flowed.”
