Kenya Commercial Bank FC went top of the BetKing Premier League table standings after a 2-0 victory over Western Stima FC in Kisumu, their second win over the same side this season.
A brace on either side of the half time break from Derrick Otanga ensured Zedekiah Otieno’s men went top of the table as Tusker surrendered in Mombasa to Bandari.
The bankers have been chasing the top spot ever since relinquishing it in May and with the Caf Champions League slot gone, now chase the overall title.
Otanga struck in the 27th minute after slicing his way through the Sima defense line. The hosts of the day, desperately fighting to stay afloat, knew what lay ahead was an uphill struggle.
The visitors preserved their lead at the break.
A stringiest of changes rang in for the home side with such youngsters as Laban Otieno thrown into thefold to rescue the team. Otanga had other ideas.
On 63 minutes, the former Wazito man struck from just outside the box for 2-0, a lead Stima would never recover from.
Bagging a man of the match performance from the tie, the KCB ointment reiterated the importance of winning the title.
”We know we won’t represent the country in the Caf Champions League even if we win the league but winning it is enough motivation. Being called champions is enough motivation and that’s why we are going for it,” he said after the match.
KCB ascend to the top due to Tusker’s floundering at the Coast. Coach Robert Matano’s men fell 2-1 to Bandari FC and will now occupy second position on the log, two points behind KCB.
