Geoffrey Oputi played his third successive match for Kakamega Homeboyz FC on Saturday when they hosted Nairobi City Stars at the Bukhungu Stadium- a 2-0 win in the round 11 BetKing Premier League clash that had him named man of the match.
Oputi, taking over from seasoned shot-stopper David Juma, in round 8 when Kakamega Homeboyz played Bidco United, pulled stellar saves for Nicholas Muyoti’s men last Saturday for a 0-0 half time scoreline that would awaken the side.
In the second half, while his forwards found their mojo upfront, Oputi kept denying the City boys. He read the plays well he says.
”What worked for me and my defence was reading the plays well, way before they happened, and that ensured we cleared our lines in time,”
The man who has also turned out for Kenya Commercial Bank and Vihiga United before, was also tasked with brilliant 1v1 saves that clearly put him as the topmost performer against a City Stars side that was also under pressure to win.
”We knew they were under pressure to win and so were we. As a team we haven’t had the greatest start to the season so everyone is looking at us, asking what’s happening. So we badly needed to win again because on the road also, we lost,” he adds.
Shami Mwinyi was the one to fire the hosts into the lead, after which David Okoth rose off the bench to bury the tie with virtually the last kick of the game. It’s a victory that elevates Muyoti’s men to 11th on the log.
They next travel to Kisumu to face a Western Stima side also rebuilding from a disastrous start to the season.
