Defending BetKing Premier League champions Gor Mahia FC were on Saturday 27th edged 2-1 by bogey team Nzoia Sugar FC in a round 13 match played at the Mumias Sports Complex from 3:15 pm.
Despite taking a deserved lead through Samuel Onyango in the first half, a comfortable Gor would be caught twice by the sugar millers through Gaetan Masha and Moses Mwale.
The visitors started with intent, and on minute 13 had Miheso Clifton curl an attempt from the age of the box that had clearly beaten goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi but went just an inch too wide.
Samuel Onyango though, would find the target with his 20th minute effort from the edge of the box as Gor took the lead. Nzoia had by this time opted to play behind the ball but now had to come out in search of a response.
The first half would end with Gor still piling pressure on the home side, Muguna with two ferocious drives towards goal be undone by precision. Gor led at the break.
Coach Vas Pinto threw in Brazilian striker Silva in Ulimwengu Jules’ place in the hope of more goals but it was the home side that came out guns blazing in the second half. Gaetan Masha needed only five minutes upon restart to tap home the equaliser from a James Kibande delivery.
The champions had been rattled, but would be riled even more when Nzoia right-back Moses Mwale caught Boniface Oluoch with a stunning goal from well over 35 yards. This was 2-1 and an upset loomed.
Tito Okello was thrown in for John Macharia but nothing was forthcoming for vas Pinto’s side as the hosts put the tie under lock and key, winning 2-1 and causing a massive upset in the 2020/21 BetKing Premier League campaign.
Earlier at the same venue, Western Stima had held Vihiga United to a goalless draw in a bottom of the table clash as both teams maintained position 17 and 16 respectively.
