Nairobi City Stars left it late at Narok Stadium as a solitary Rodgers Okumu goal in the 87th minute ensured they got their fifth consecutive win in the BetKing Premier League following a 1-0 win against Nzoia Sugar on Friday afternoon.
City Stars showed early intent with , Peter ‘Pinchez’Opiyo making the first attempt on goal just in the second minute.
Experienced Salim ‘Shittu’ Abdalla almost made a costly mistake for City Stars in the 15th minute after gifting the ball cheaply to Nzoia but the millers, who broke away in a counter, could not make anything useful of it, much to the reprieve of the former Ingwe man.
The game dissipated into a lull as both sides were unable to create clear cut chances and opportunities to influence the game.
Just a minute before the half time interval City Stars thought they would get awarded penalty kick when Shittu’s header appeared to have hit a defender’s hand from a free kick but the center referee waved play on despite clamour from the City Stars side.
Okumu should have given City Stars the lead in the 67th minute after rounding the goalkeeper but a heavy touched ensured the dimunitive player struggled to direct his effort on goal.
Okumu would however not miss on a second invitation with just three minutes left on the clock when he slotted the ball into the back of the net to steal three points from the match and complete the double over Nzoia Sugar.
Following the win and Kariobangi Sharks capitulation in Mombasa, City Stars jumped into fifth place on the log on 32 points as Nzoia Sugar stayed fourteenth on 17 points.
