Mathare United gave their survival hopes a huge shot in the arm on Wednesday as they rallied to defeat AFC Leopards 1-0 in rescheduled BetKing Premier League (BPL) tie played at the Ruaraka grounds on Wednesday.
Eugene Wethuli scored the all-important goal in first half stoppage time, taking his time to place the ball past an onrushing Benjamin Ochan, from inside the area, after being played through by John Mwangi.
The win, Frank Ouna’s first in charge of Mathare, lifted the Slumboys up to within four points of safety, though they still remain bottom of the log.
The result was detrimental to Leopards who were looking to move to within two points of top spot. Patrick Aussems men have struggled in recent outings with their last win being the first leg upset of today’s opponents back in May.
It is Mathare though who had stayed the longest without a win, 135 days to be exact, with their last win being the 1-0 win over Nzoia Sugar in February.
Ouna’s charges will now look to build on this huge result for when they take to the field next, which will be this coming Saturday against Posta Rangers in the first game of a scheduled double-header at Ruaraka. Leopards will play the late kickoff at the ground against Sofapaka.
