Mathare United were 2-1 victors over Nzoia Sugar in an FKFPFL matchday 4 encounter played at the Sudi Stadium in Bungoma on Sunday.
New signing Martin Nderitu netted his debut strike for the club early in the first half with John Mwangi grabbing the winner with 12 minutes left to play. Hassan Beja’s strike, right at the stroke of halftime, would prove to be a consolation as Mathare secured their second win in succession to move into the Top 8 on the FKFPL log.
Nzoia proved to be more than a handful and bossed play with Felicien Okanda, Titus Kapchanga and James Kibande coming close on numerous occasions to beating Job Ochieng. The Mathare shotstopper held his own in goal and was a key figure towards securing the win.
After the horrors of last season where the 2008 league champions almost relegation, their start to this campaign shows a team that has already learnt its lesson and are keen on getting points in early on the board.
Losses to Bandari and Ulinzi on matchday’s one and two threatened to put new coach Ezekiel Akwana on the chopping board but their new found mojo proves that his appointment was right on the money given that he is a former Mathare player and understands perfectly the intricacies of the club.
For Nzoia, the loss, their third in four matches, leaves them winless and in the relegation zone with a single point.
Coach Ibrahim Shikanda will be hoping that he can put an end to the unfortunate start despite having lost a number of his players from last season.
