Mathare United continued with their purple patch on Saturday as they beat Nairobi City Stars 2-0 in an FKFPL round 31 encounter staged at the Ruaraka grounds.
Goals either side of half time from Clifford Alwanga and Daniel Otieno secured Mathare’s third straight win that in turn saw them move three points clear of the relegation zone.
Starting in his first game of the season and given the Captain’s armband, Alwanga got the ball rolling in the 10th minute when a lose ball from inside the area – after some good work down the right flank by James Kinyanjui – fell kindly for him to score with a cheeky back heel.
The goal gave Mathare, who have come into some fine form in recent outings, the impetous needed to secure the win as they dominated play in an opening stanza that also saw both teams forced into making changes due to injury with Norman Ogolla and Wycliffe Otieno being stretchered out.
They would not add to their advantage until the 68th minute though when hero of the Slum Derby in the previous round, Daniel Otieno, scored with a superb freekick that left Steve Njung’e in the City Stars goal rooted to his spot.
With 22 minutes still left to play, Otieno’s goal proved to be the final nail in the coffin as Mathare held out for their third win on the trot that now has them on 24 points, three above Western Stima who play on Sunday against Posta Rangers.
