After a disheartening fifty two days of staying in the cold, the BetKing Premier League (BKPL) is back! Oh boy, it has been tough getting here but the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. On the 1st of May, after President Uhuru Kenyatta rescinded on the decision to suspend all sporting activities, there was a glimmer of hope.
The Ministry of Sports, Culture and Heritage was instructed to provide the guidelines that would ensure resumption of the game. Now that that is over and done with, matchday 17 in the BKPL beckons as eight games lined up for this weekend await to thrill and excite. Ahead of those games we give you a little teaser of what to expect.
Clash of the Titans
It is said big moments call for big occasions. Those words have never been truer if this weekend’s fixtures are anything to go by. Log leading Tusker FC host second placed KCB with the two teams only separated by four points between them. Should KCB win, the gap will be reduced to only one point with the Bankers still having a one game advantage. The Brewers on the other hand will be looking to create a buffer between them and the Bankers when they clash. With teams having stayed out of the game for over seven weeks, this fixture may just paint a clear picture of who wants it more when it comes to the title race this season.
4th placed Kariobangi Sharks welcome a seventh placed Kakamega Homeboyz in the opening game of the league’s restart. Despite an eight point difference in the league standings, Sharks will be wary coming into the match. In the last four out of five meetings between the two sides, Homeboyz have emerged victorious over the William Muluya-coached side with Shark’s only win coming in a 1-0 win back in 2019. The positive news for Sharks however is the presence of the league’s top scorer in Eric Kapaito who will be hoping to pick off from where he left off at 14 goals, three clear of his closest challenger.
Relegation dog fight
When Mathare United welcome Vihiga United on Sunday, only one thing will be ringing at the back of the two teams’ minds, how to avoid relegation, as the two teams are currently the bottom two in the league standings. Mathare will seeking to close the five point gap difference between them and the county funded side while Vihiga will be aiming to do the viceversa. Since the 2020/2021 season started, the slum boys have failed to get out of the relegation places till this far, performances they will be looking to overturn if they are to beat the drop.
Can Gor come alive?
Troubles at league defending champions have been well documented this season. It is however said, that true champions are the ones who come alive when no one expects them to. As the record Kenyan champions sit 14 points off the pace in 8th position, can we see the unexpected from the green army in the second half of the season?
Until then, enjoy the game!
