Vihiga United put a fantastic final performance at the Bukhungu Stadium against hosts Kakamega Homeboyz to end their 2020/21 campaign heads high- and with a little hope of staying afloat in the FKF Premier League. Coming from behind to dispatch Homeboyz 3-1, United end their season on 23 points and will hope that Mathare United and Western Stima can flounder more in their last matches.
Having gone 1-0 down to a Kingsley Olaniyi opener, United rallied to level the scores through Luvanda Lawrence. Centre-back Sindani Simbiri would net before the break for a 2-1 lead. All looked to be going United’s way when luck once more smiled at them when Stewart Omondi was brought down in the box on 90 minutes. Luvanda stepped up Ito complete his brace.
It was the visitors United who showed more intent from the start and duly kept the Homeboyz flanks at bay. Upfront for them, it was Stewart Omondi and Lawrence Luvanda causing havoc.
Luvanda had a snapshot in the 7th minute, dully kept out by David Juma.
Nigerian import Kingsley Olaniyi was starting his first match for Homeboyz and was eager to impress, in the 25th minute, latching onto a Shami Kibwana pass, he delivered.
This was however short lived as Luvanda arrived to Homeboyz’s blind side to welcome with his head a Stewart Omondi cross. It was 1-1 and there was hope for Vihiga.
It looked like it would go to the break a draw but centerback Sindani Simbiri had other ideas, heading past Juma for 2-1. Homeboyz were stunned.
The second half was all Homeboyz, with Coach Muyoti even withdrawing Juma in favour of Geoffrey Oputi. Thomas Wainaina too was thrown in for Benjamin Oketch. This would improve the hosts possession of the ball but little to show for it.
On 90 minutes, Stewart broke away from the very high Homeboyz backline and had to be brought down by Oputi in a one versus one situation. United had won a penalty in stoppage time. Luvanda tacked this away and saw his team hold on to win 3-1, finishing third from bottom- a play-off position.
