A Nicholas Kipkirui strike after the hour mark was all that was needed to secure all three points for Nairobi City Stars as they beat Kakamega Homeboyz 1-0 on Saturday in a BetKing Premier League (BPL) round 20 fixture staged at the Ruaraka grounds.
The win, City Stars’ eighth of the season, pushed the Kawangware based side up to 6th on the BPL log with 29 points, three above 9th placed Kakamega.
Kipkirui, netting only his second goal in the league for the club, took advantage of some slack defending after the Homeboyz backline had failed to clear his initial shot that had been parried by Geoffrey Oputi.
After the goal Nicholas Muyoti’s men were left to rue their wasted chances and none more painful than Chris Masinza’s missed penalty immediately after the restart.
The striker, who has not missed from the spot this season, took the ball after a handball in the area but failed to get the better of Steve Njung’e who kept his side in the game with a superb save.
And with that both teams shared the season’s spoils with Homeboyz getting the first-leg win (2-0) in Kakamega.
Both teams will next take to the pitch in a week’s time with City Stars playing Wazito on June 30, a day after Homeboyz visit Bidco United.
