KCB FC extended their lead a top the BetKing Premier League (BPL) standings on Saturday to four points after securing a slim win over Mathare United in a round 21 fixture staged at the Ruaraka grounds.
Derrick Otanga scored from the spot, after 57 minutes, the game’s only goal that moved the Bankers to 42 points.
The result was also crucial on the opposite end of the log where Mathare lie bottom with eight points and now seven adrift of safety.
For the second time against Mathare, it was former Sony Sugar man Otanga who provided the killer blow. In the first leg fixture, played at the same venue slightly over a month ago, Otanga came off the bench to net the winner that secured a 2-1 win that rekindled KCB’s title ambitions that had at the time started to wane.
Saturday’s result saw Mathare compounded to their 13th loss of the campaign and though they played with purpose and at times had KCB on the ropes, it is bad luck that denied them at least a point.
Several chances went begging in the opening stanza from the Slumboys with defender Lennox Ogutu and striker Eugene Wethuli wasting two clear cut chances.
Frank Ouna’s men will be hoping for better tidings in their next assignment which will be against Posta Rangers on Thursday 24 June. Rangers won the first-leg tie 2-0.
KCB on their part have a full week’s break before taking to the pitch against Nzoia Sugar. The Millers shocked KCB in their first meeting played in February, winning 2-1 at their Sudi ground.
