Erick Kapaito’s 79th minute strike was all Kariobangi Sharks needed to see of Vihiga United when the two clashed at the Mumias Sports Complex, a round 12 BetKing Premier League match kicking off at 3pm.
Kapaito, properly contained in the opening half, showed up late in the game to net his 13th of the season.
A lot of draw had characterised this match in the past and the Sharks man upfront was keen on changing this right from kick-off. In the 4th minute, arriving just in time for a Daniel Sakari cut-back, Kapaito would fail to connect.
The home team Vihiga United came up with a chance of their own but Dennis Wafula, though finding the target, could not see his shot go past Brandon Obiero in goal for Sharks. Cagey play would follow for the next half hour after which Julis Masaba unleashed a pile driver just before half time. This was wide and the teams had to settle for a barren opening half.
United began the second half in earnest, earning a penalty kick five minutes upon restart. Centre-back Geoffrey Lemu had hacked down Wafula in the danger area. Norman Werunga, trusted all season long with such responsibilities, fluffed this chance as Obiero equalled his effort from the spot.
Coach Sammy Okoth then threw in Hillary Oriadha for Patrick Okullo. His opposite number, William Muluya, would wait ten more minutes before shuffling his card. He threw in Mokaya Douglas for Peter Lwassa in the 69th minute.
With ten minutes of regulation time remaining, Kapaito would see the hosts rue their earlier missed chances when he fired past Mustappha Oduor in goal for the hosts.
The visitors would keep this lead- winning three crucial points on the road.
