Kakamega Homeboyz FC have been on a good run recently in the BetKing Premier League and one of their main pillars in attack is David Okoth Odhiambo, three goals in the team’s last two matches.
Okoth, also on target during the team’s 2-1 away win over Mathare United in April, has gone to six goals after a slow start to both the club and his personal endeavours. His fantastic form brings him close to player of the month performance and this he believes he can earn.
”It’s a strange season this one, one moment you are up and running, scoring goals and giving assists and next, the league is stopped. If you are a player that relies on form to perform, it’s not that great for you,” says the left-footed attacker.
The winger played an integral role in last season’s premier league campaign that saw Homeboyz finish second behind champions Gor Mahia, finishing second in the assists roster behind international midfielder Kenneth Muguna. When the 2020/21 season began, he picked it off with the points’ decider against Vihiga United on match day one of the BKPL.
This was just him picking up from where he had left.
”Last season would have been better but seeing as the way things ended, we needed to pick ourselves up and believe that we could do it again as a team. Scoring on match day one was an immense morale booster for me, indicated that we had only lost time, but not the touch,” he adds.
Homeboyz though, would struggle in the weeks to come, struggle for goals and for points. But Coach Nicholas Muyoti’s men soon found their mojo back and his forward line started firing in left, right and centre. From three goals, Okoth has suddenly shot to six.
”I think what is best is to keep training even when inactive in the league. For example, right now we have over two weeks without football because we are not playing in the domestic cup but our training is still intense. When we come back to action, we will deliver the same performances as in our last matches,” concludes the man who scored twice in Homeboyz’s last action in the league.
Kakamega Homeboyz have risen to 7th on the BKPL table standings having won four of their last five matches and will have a trip to Nairobi City Stars when the league returns.
