Homeboyz take The Mid-table battle to Ulinzi

The two teams right at the heart of the BetKing Premier League table standings after round 23, Kakamega Homeboyz and Ulinzi Stars square out on Sunday 4th at the ASK Nakuru Showground. The tie on points, and almost no goal difference too.

Homeboyz play as the home team but would have very much loved to host Ulinzi Stars at their home ground Bukhungu Stadium. As per the current Covid-19 containment measures in Kakamega County, the match can not be hosted in Bukhungu. So Homeboyz have the ASK Showground as their home away from home. Ulinzi have no complains about the venue; it’s right in the hear of Nakuru county, their home county.

Coach Nicholas Muyoti’s meant took a 2-0 defeat from the soldiers in the first leg, played at the Afraha stadium and will want to respond in kind. Homeboyz have struggled to bag maximum points from their last three fixtures, losing to Nairobi City Stars, being held by Kenya Commercial Bank before seeing Bidco United come back in Thika to share the spoils at 1-1. The only positive thing Muyoti’s charges carry into Sunday’s contest is that they have found their scoring boots once more.

May player of the month David Okoth was responsible for the opener against Bidco on Wednesday. He has worked hard for it.

”I had not trained with the team for the entire week due national team engagements so we lost a little part of the chemistry but I am happy to be back on the scoring charts. We should have won against Bidco, they are a good side but having allowed us to get the opener, I think we deserved the three points,” says Okoth who is now on 6 goals for the season.

Okoth alongside Sylvester Owino are the two names in Kenya’s U23 squad currently preparing for upcoming international duties.

Ulinzi Stars players celebrating Clinton Omondi’s goal in the 1-0 win over Nzoia Sugar at Narok on Friday 28 May.

Ulinzi on the other hand took a magnanimous fall at the feet of Tusker FC, a 4-1 drubbing that finally put a halt to their incredible 6-game run. Playing at the ASK grounds, the soldiers had taken the lead only to relinquish it at the mercy of a Caf Champions League-chasing Tusker.

The duo lock horns in a tie that has ended square three of the last five times it was played, with Homeboyz winning one while the soldiers winning the other. Seeing as both teams have amassed just the same number of points from the season at this point, it is an evenly-matched contest.

The match is slated for a 3 pm kick-off.
