Homeboyz happy to return to winning ways

Kakamega Homeboyz finally earned their first win in two attempts at their new found homeground, the ASK Nakuru Showground. A 3-1 dismissal of Ulinzi Stars set Nicholas Muyoti’s men on the path to a strong finish in the 2020/21 BetKing Premier League having had a topsy-turvy campaign.

Shami Kibwana scored a brace on either side of Allan Wanga’s brilliant finish to give Homeboyz a 3-0 lead in the clash. John Njuguna would however soil keeper Geoffrey Oputi’s sheets with a lone consolation goal for the soldiers.

Having drawn with Kenya Commercial Bank the last time they took their home matches at the ASK, the Kakamega based side took a cagey first half approach that in retrospect, worked. Playing two central midfielders in Francis Omondi and Steve Wakanya contained the soldiers’ buildup but was also the recipe for quick counters.

Coach Muyoti is pleased with the result and looks forward to more, in an unfamiliar territory.

”We have to make the most of the matches at the showground because that’s our home venue at the moment and I am pleased with the way the boys reacted,” he says.

Homeboyz had drawn 1-1 away from home in Thika against Bidco United and kept searching for dominant performances. They got an unlikely one against an Ulinzi side that that has the best clean sheet record in the league. The brace hero, Shami, talks of self-belief.

”Believing in self is key. We know we have a very good squad and the competition for starting places is high. So when you get a chance to start, you just want to deliver. And I am happy I delivered,” says the former Thika United man.

The side takes on a relegation-threatened Mathare United side in a consecutive home game this Saturday, one they are keen on winning.

”It would be nice to finish strongly. The season has had its ups and downs and when we get a big win like we did against Ulinzi, the morale is usually high so we go for another win against Mathare,” adds Muyoti.

Mathare United still lie bottom of the log but have won two of their last three matches and look very much so a formidable opponent, considering their quest for survival. Homeboyz on the other hand, have already welcomed back former Mathare man Francis Omondi from a brief injury spell and he will be pleased to start against his former employers.
