Homeboyz’ first-half flurry annihilates Rangers

A devastating first-half showing from Kakamega Homeboyz saw them pick-up all the spoils against Posta Rangers on the road as they ran out 3-1 victors at the Utalii grounds in a matchday 19 BetKing Premier League (BPL) encounter played on Friday 28 May.

David Odhiambo helped himself to a brace, netting either side of Bernard Ondieki’s effort that had restored a bit of dignity to the scoreline for The Mailmen after Chris Mbehelo’s 4th minute opener.

The win sees Nicholas Muyoti’s men move up to within touching distance of the league’s top five as they now lie in 7th place with 26 points, two behind fifth placed Gor Mahia.

Daylight

On their part, Rangers fail to put more daylight between them and the relegation zone and remain in 13th place with 18 points, six above the drop.

Homeboyz were the more pro-active side from the get-go with Moses Mudavadi almost getting the ball rolling as early as the second minute but Kevin Opiyo dealt well in the one-on-one situation to deny the winger.

He would however do little to stop Homeboyz from taking the lead just two minutes later after the visitors’ attacking prowess saw Mbehelo win and converted a penalty in the 4th minute.

Setpiece

The pace would die down a bit after the goal but not for too long as in the 23rd minute, the lively Odhiambo would again showcase Homeboyz’ setpiece suitability by curling a freekick past Opiyo from the edge of the area.

Former Gor Mahia midfielder Ondiek would halve the deficit with an acrobatic finish in the 37th minute to help give the hosts hopes of a comeback but on the stroke of half-time, Odhiambo would restore the visitors’ two-goal cushion with a well struck low shot into the bottom corner and in the process secure the points with a full-half left to play.

With the job seemingly done in the first half, Homeboyz took a back seat in the second looking to preserve their lead. They however could have netted a fourth for the second game running only for the woodwork to come in the rescue for Rangers.
