Gor trounce Mathare in Vaz Pinto’s first game in charge

Gor Mahia brushed aside Mathare United 3-1 in a BetKing Premier League (BPL) catch-up fixture played at the outside pitch of the Kasarani Stadium on Thursday 14 January.

Goals from Charles Momanyi, Kenneth Muguna and Alpha Onyango handed Portuguese tactician Manuel Vaz Pinto the perfect start as head coach of the defending league champions after being appointed less than a week ago.

South Sudanese import Dani Lual grabbed Mathare’s lone goal from the spot.

Red cards

Gor would however end the match with 10-men after Nicholas Kipkirui saw red for instigating a scuffle between both sets of players. Mathare’s James Kinyanjui, who at the time had been substituted, also saw red.

Both teams went into the tie having conceded four goals in their previous outings and were in desperate need of a positive result.

Gor settled quickly however and were the first out the blocks thanks to a Momanyi header from a corner just three minutes into the game. After quarter of an hour, Gor would again find the back of the net, this time through Captain Muguna who placed a low drive from outside of the area, past an outstretched Job Ochieng in the Mathare goal.

Penalty

Substitute Lual would however convert from the spot with 20 minutes left to play after Slumboys Captain Chris Oduor had won a penalty.

Looking to build on their goal, Mathare would be caught at the back as young forward Alpha, who had been on the pitch just a matter of minutes, sealed the win with a calmly taken effort.

The win has Gor sitting in 11th place with six points from four matches. Mathare on their part sit bottom of the standings without a single point after two matches.
