Gor Mahia made it five out of five wins after beating Wazito by a solitary goal in Monday’s Betking Premier League (BPL) match at Utalii grounds.
The win leaves Gor Mahia seven points off top spot with a game in hand and made it four consecutive victories against Wazito who they have also never conceded against.
Wazito were the more adventurous side in the beginning with Rooney Onyango delivering a good cross but Gor Mahia’s Harun Shakava cleared his attempt for the first corner of the game.
After a period where none of the teams tested the others keeper, Micheal Owino spotted Gad Matthews off his line but his long range effort sailed over the bar.
Gor Mahia slowly started getting into the game and Levis Opiyo was alert to keep out Geoffrey Ochieng’s effort. Minutes before halftime,Karim Abdoul had a chance to give the visitors the lead which Opiyo saved to ensure both sides were level at the break.
Seeking to add more impetus in their attack,Wazito’s Kevin Kimani was introduced for Boniface Omondi. Philemon made a good delivery to find striker Tito Okello but his effort was saved by Opiyo.
Shortly after,Opiyo made a mistake through a misspass and Tito Okello was unable to score in an empty net. Gor Mahia continued ramping up the pressure and Andrew Juma had a chance with his effort narrowly missing the target while a Clinton Miheso long range attempt went wide.
With time running out, Sammy Onyango came in for Tito Okello and they made another triple substitution as they sought the lead. With eight minutes to go, the substitutes gave their side the lead after a good Onyango through ball found Jules Ulimwengu to give Gor the lead.
Sammy Onyango would get his marching orders on the stroke of full-time but by then, the damage had already been done.
Gor Mahia will now turn their attention to the Fkf Betway cup where they face Eldoret based side CUSCO while Wazito who are not participating in the cup will reflect on their poor form which has seen them plummet down the table after starting the season well.
