Champions Gor Mahia picked a narrow 1-0 win over Nairobi City Stars in Sunday’s Betking Premier League (BPL) match at Ruaraka grounds.
Karim Nikiema’s goal in the 31st minute was all that the defending champions needed to bag maximum points.
The Burkinabe player should have opened his account early in the match but failed to score after being put through by Cliftone Miheso from an impressive combination with Tito Okello.
Nkiema’s weak effort was easily dealt with by Stephen Njunge in the City Stars goal.
Three minutes later, as Gor Mahia maintained their attack, Tito Okello’s glancing header hit the post and Nkiema failed to convert from the rebound as his effort hit the post for a goal-kick.
The pressure finally paid off in the 31st minute when Nkiema beat Njunge in the City Star’s goal with a right footed effort giving Gor Mahia a 1-0 lead at the break.
Inspired by the goal, Gor Mahia came into the second half determined to maintain their lead and Muguna was denied from an open sitter after he had been put through by John Macharia in the 57th minute.
City Stars were reduced to ten men in the 71st minute after Elvis Ombija’s was sent off. This did not however, help Gor Mahia to add more goals as their opponents opted to defend and avoid conceding any more goals.
The defending champions are now placed sixth on the log with 25 points from 15 matches.
