Gor Mahia beats Ulinzi Stars to start defence on a high

Reigning league champions Gor Mahia got off to a winning start in the
BetKing Premier League after beating Ulinzi Stars 1-0 in the two sides’ opening game at the Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday 12th December.

Jules Ulimwengu came off the bench with immediate impact to score in the 63rd minute what would be the winner after the Ulinzi Stars defence lost
concentration for a moment. The striker had the easiest of tap ins after a
cross from the right was misjudged by the Ulinzi backline.

The goal came as a shocker, with both teams having put up astute defending throughout the match and Ulinzi Stars will go home really disappointed after hitting the bar twice in the match and on at least three occasions going close.

Early in the opening half, Clifton Miheso went close for Gor Mahia, with a
free kick that rattled the bar in the third minute before John Njuguna also hit the bar with a free kick and Enosh Ochieng headed weakly from the rebound.

A well balanced first half ended all square until Ulimwengu was introduced
and two minutes later made the big difference.

Daniel Waweru should have leveled matters in the 75th minute but
his well powered shot was tipped to the bar by Gor keeper Gad Mathew and Masita Masuta flashed wide the rebound.

Waweru went close against after stealing in ahead of Gad to pick possession
in the box but from a tight angle, his shot flew off target. Sensing a goal,
Ulinzi Stars threw more men forward but resolute defending saw Gor hang on for three points.
