Gor beat lowly Mathare to inch closer to summit

Gor Mahia boosted their hopes of claiming yet another league crown on Wednesday when they beat lowly Mathare United 1-0 at the Ruaraka grounds.

A hotly contested tie was settled rather fortuitously for the record Kenyan champions with Mathare defender Lennox Ogutu putting into his own net an Alpha Onyango cross after 39 minutes.

The win, being the sixth on the trot, continued K’Ogalo’s surge up the standings where they now sit in 4th place with 34 points and just five adrift of leaders KCB FC.

Game in hand

Still with a game in hand on the teams in and around them, Vaz Pinto’s men have put themselves in the hunt for another league crown with 14 matches still left to play.

For Mathare, the result heightens relegations fears as they remain rooted at the bottom of the standings with eight points and now seven adrift of safety.

Frank Ouna’s men fought till the very end on Wednesday and will go home feeling buoyed by their performance which saw them at times have their opponents on the ropes.
