1.Elvis ‘Machapo’ Rupia is untouchable.
Elvis Rupia might have endured tough stints after leaving Nzoia Sugar back in 2019, but recent form in the opening three Match Days may suggest that the striker has turned a corner to his on-field challenges. A hat trick in 16 minutes against Sofapaka propelled the Ingwe forward to the top of the scoring charts with six goals, the closest challenger scoring three. Rupia may not only seem to love chapos, his love for goals is also on show for all to see this season again. A look at his hunger and work rate on the pitch points to a man who will surely challenge for the Golden Boot this season. Watch this space.
2. Highest scoring matchweek yet.
Match Day 1 provided 14 goals. Match Day 2 had 13 goals. Match Day 3 saw defenses ship in 22 goals, the highest that has been witnessed in the 2020/2021 #BKPL season yet. Of the 22 goals 4 were penalties and one was an own goal. This is testament of what the league is becoming, where more and more teams are taking the initiative to score goals. Things are changing around here, which should make for a very riveting title campaign this season.
3. Tactical Showdown.
The weekend’s tactical masterclass came from the match featuring Posta Rangers and Wazito at Utalii grounds. Francis Kimanzi, Wazito head coach, is renowned for his Guardiola-esque football: tiki-taka and composure on the ball. Posta Rangers on the other hand, are your typical Jose Mourinho-like team: stay compact always, park up when ahead and taking your chances whenever the opportunity arises. Despite striking the crossbar twice on two different occasions by Wazito, this situation unfolded as expected on Sunday as the two teams could not break the deadlock.
Consistency in football is akin to what food is to life, sustenance. Consistency grows the team’s confidence and churns out results that lift the team. After three weeks in the BKPL, AFC Leopards and KCB are the only sides to have played three and won three. A 100% record. At the heart of these two teams’ impressive start are Elvis Rupia and Michael Mutinda respectively. Gor Mahia also have a 100% start to the season but they have only played one game.
5. Simba wa Nairobi dares to roar
Out of the opening three games, Nairobi City Stars have won two. One of those wins came over the weekend against a Bandari side that had not conceded a goal in their first two games. City Stars managed to get two past them and walked away with a clean sheet in the process. For a team that was only promoted to the top tier this season, such performances are golden. A couple more of such results and City Stars may pull a surprise to many teams this season.
