The fixtures for the 2020/21 BetKing Premier League are set to be released on Wednesday 14 October the league organizers have confirmed.
After months of a forced break owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, competitive club football in the country looks set to resume with the new FKFPL season expected to kick off in slightly over a month’s time.
In a statement shared on its social media handles, the FKFPL confirmed the above was reached in a General Council meeting held last week on Friday with much emphasis directed at not having the country fall any further behind the global footballing calendar which kicked off a month ago.
“A General Council meeting of the Kenyan top tier league – BetKing FKF Premier League – was held on Friday 9th October 2020 to deliberate on a safe return to football and the resumption of the league,” reads the statement in part, “This was informed by the need to ensure completion of the 2020/21 league season in good time and in line with the global football calendar.
“The General Council wishes to see commencement of the 2020/21 season with a league kickoff match on Friday 20th November 2020 because beyond that date it will be impossible to commence and complete the league. In this effect, the BetKing Premier League will release the draft fixtures on Wednesday 14th in order to enable the clubs plan for the season ahead.”
The 2020/21 Premier League season will be the first in 17 years to be overseen by the local football governing federation after the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Limited’s mandate to run the league came to an end in September.
The KPL had been running the league since 2003 when it was formed to curb the constant wrangles between the Federation and the Premier League clubs.
